1. After listening to Ayu's new album several times, I decided to just go on an Ayu binge and have been listening to nothing but Ayu all day. I forgot how much I love her stuff. So many favorites!

2. I thiiiiiink I may have an idea for my Remix fic. Even if I don't start writing right away (which, oh, I should, but we all know that won't happen), I want to at least get the story picked out and have an idea of what to do in the next few days.

3. So both Carla and I talked to my aunt Amy some more on Facebook last night and things are really great with her. I'm so thrilled. She's going to be down here in June and wants to go out to dinner with us, so I'm looking forward to that. We were close when I was growing up (she's only eleven years older than me), but haven't been in years, so maybe that will change now? Anyway, she said my aunt Alice's reaction was like she thinks it's all in our heads and will be praying for us or whatever, so that's that. But at least it's not like "zomg stay away from our daughter"!

And now that I'm out to both of them, there was no reason to not be out on Facebook, so I went ahead and changed my name on there and posted a blurb about what's going on. So far I had one positive comment from a friend from school. (And two "likes", but those were from people who already knew, so.)

Mama wa Mukashi Papa Datta
me as a doll
I have had this six-episode drama on my hard drive for ages and only just now got to it. Thanks to this new monitor, which is big enough to let me watch TV while doing even more things than before, I have really been going through my to-watch stock quickly. Plus it's hiatus for a bunch of US shows I'm following.

Anyway, the title translates to Mama Used to Be Papa, so as you can guess, it's about a trans woman with children. The law in Japan is that if you are diagnosed with GID and have SRS, you can change your gender on the family register (which functions as birth/marriage/adoption/death certificate). However, if you have children, you cannot change your gender on the register, which means even if, like the woman in this drama, you change your name, have full SRS, and live fulltime as female, your ID and everything still says male. Obviously this causes problems and opens people up to harrassment.

So this drama follows Hitomi, a single mother of two elementary-school-aged boys and the discrimination she faces. On the whole it's an enjoyable show and I think it's good that it's out there, but. BUT.

1. The main character is played by a cis woman. Despite the fact that they cast a trans woman as a supporting character, so it's clear they know trans women exist. Also, the main character actually looks more "mannish" or at least plain, than the supporting character, so I kind of wonder if that's why they cast her. (Like how they used prosthetics to make Felicty Huffman look more "mannish" in Transamerica.) A third supporting character who is also a trans woman is played by a man.

2. Trans men don't appear to exist in this world, despite the fact that they have three trans women. (I mean, if there is only one trans person in a show, I'm going to cut it more slack, but if they're making the effor to have multiple trans characters, can we have both men and women? I find this is often a problem and it's one reason I love Hourou Musuko so much.)

3. No queer people anywhere, much less queer trans people. Made especially problematic by the fact that the show goes out of its way to emphasise that trans people are totes not like those icky gays! I'm all for saying being trans is not the same as being gay (it's not!), but this was definitely done in a "we're all just normal heterosexual people like you!" way.

4. Speaking of which, although Hitomi has children, they really went out of their way to avoid any possible taint of the gay with her and her ex-wife. It turns out they never even had sex! The kids were both conceived by artificial insemination.

5. The story is just really, really tired. This is why I loved that post I linked the other day so much. Because there is this one narrative for trans people, and God forbid you don't conform to it. When Hitomi's father is asked when he first knew Hitomi was trans, and he says it's when Hitomi was about three, I totally knew what was going to come next. Sure enough, Hitomi tried to cut off her penis with scissors. And over and over it's emphasised that Hitomi would be dead if she hadn't transitioned. And she repeats the same thing when trying to convince another trans woman's grandfather. Because you're not really trans if it doesn't make you suicidal. Also there is no allowance for people who don't want full SRS. If you're trans, you must want to go "all the way".

So yeah. Honestly, I think #5 bothers me the most. Because there are more and more stories out there about trans people, in books and manga and TV and movies, but they're all the exact same story.

1. I loved this hilarious video on how to speak Christianese. Those are totally words and phrases I grew up hearing all the time. (And by strange coincidence, the video is made by the church where my uncle used to be an assistant pastor.)

2. I had seen this linked by a bunch of people, but always with no context, so I never clicked, because the title didn't sound that interesting. But here is quote so you can see why you should click and read the whole thing:

If I come across a person who seems to completely ignore the existence of apostrophes and capital letters and types things like "im an eagle and im typing with my talons, so dont make fun of me cuz this is hard," I like to imagine that they actually are an eagle typing with their talons. It would be a hassle if you had to hop in the air and use your feet to karate-chop two keys simultaneously every time you wanted to use the shift key to make a capital letter. Also, eagles lack manual dexterity, so I can understand why they'd want to leave out apostrophes. Eagles are all about efficiency.

3. I scanned vol. 3 of Aozora Yell, which you can download here. Next up is 7 Seeds vol. 17. (Yes, all my raw scanning will be pretty random, as the whole point is this is stuff I haven't been able to find online.)

4. I went through my LJ and culled a bunch more journals and comms. I really want to try to cut down my reading there as much as possible once I no longer have a paid account. I want to cut even more comms and read them by DW feed instead, but DW's feed checker is broken (it says there is no feed even when there is one, so you're prompted to create a duplicate feed; I submitted a support request) so I'm holding off on that for now.

5. I guess my mom must have told my aunts (or at least one of them, but I can't imagine her telling one and not the other) about me and Carla, because I got a message on Facebook last night from my aunt saying "We just wanted to let you know that no matter what -- whatever you do -- we love you, accept you, and will never judge you in any way. Family is family, and life is too short."

So that makes me pretty happy. That is pretty much the sort of reaction I expected from her (though I was unsure how her husband would react). I would expect the same from my other aunt, too, but now that they have a kid, I don't know if that would change things (especially after Carla's sister's "don't ever go near our kids again" reaction).

I didn't tell my mom not to tell them, so I'm not upset with her for doing so at all. In fact, it's a weight off my shoulders, because I didn't know if I should tell them and possibly create conflict or hold off for a while. I do hope I hear something from my other aunt, though. If not, maybe I will email her myself.

Ozaki Yutaka - Boku ga Boku de Aru Tame ni
I first heard this song years ago as the theme to a SMAP drama by the same name (something about them all being on a track team) and instantly fell in love with it. But that was back in the day before you could just download whatever songs you wanted off the internet, so it was years before I heard it again, and that was when I got a mix tape from a friend that happened to have that song on it. Anyway. Good song! Still my favorite by him.

1. [personal profile] cesare wrote a great post about why Better Off Ted is an awesome show.

2. [personal profile] thefourthvine posted some hilarious "overheard on the playground" conversations.

3. I really liked this post about being a "bad trans person" and the ways in which the OP doesn't fit the accepted trans narrative.

Here's some for me:

-I have never felt suicidal because of being trans (or for any other reason).

-As a kid, I never told my mom I was a boy/wanted to be a boy.

-I played with My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake and Sylvanian Family as much as I played with Matchbox cars and Transformers and Star Wars.

There are a ton more, but I'm tired and can't think very well at the moment.

4. We got our Netflix Wii disc in the mail! Now we can stream stuff on the Wii and watch it on our TV!

5. I made splitpea soup and omg it is so delicious.

6. I updated my lyrics site for the first time in a month. -_-;;

P'unk~en~Ciel - Feeling Fine 2007
This is L'arc~en~Ciel doing a punk self-cover of Feeling Fine, which was already one of my favorite songs by them, but omg this version is even awesomer. I love it so, so, so much.

Parks & Rec, Modern Family, Venture Bros
me as a doll
So I'm all caught up with Parks and Recreation now and really loving it. I love all the characters now. Well, I'm not that keen on Mark. I mean, I don't hate him or anything, but he's not really great. I have really warmed to Andy and Ron over the second season, though. And Leslie hits my embarrassment squick a lot less often. I think Ann and Tom are still my favorites, but not by much because I've come to love the others so much.

I think I might quit watching Modern Family after the end of the season. I like the characters, but the show is so embarrassing. I just really find it hard to watch. Like last week's episode, when spoilersCollapse ) So we'll see. If nothing else, I'll finish out the season.

[personal profile] cesare is always raving about how great Venture Bros is, so I decided to give it a try, but I just think it's not for me. I watched the first five episodes and I think I laughed maybe twice. :-/

1. Through this LA Times article about pizza in LA, I found out about a pizza place that has sweet potato crust pizza. And they're in Koreatown! I know where we'll be eating next time we've over that way. :D

All the other pizzas in the article look really good, too, but none of them are anywhere even close to nearby. :(

(Speaking of pizza, last night we ordered from Pizza Hut and this is the second time that we've ordered at night and they have called to say they are out of crusts. The first time, they had no large crusts at all, so we had to cancel our order. This time, we were able to switch from regular crust to thin, but still, wtf? It was only 10pm! I could understand maybe if it was really, really late or something, but how is this how they run their business? We have ordered from Dominos probably a hundred times over the years and never once had this problem. We only recently started ordering from Pizza Hut and two out of five times, they have had no crusts. I think from now on we will only order from them earlier in the day. If it's later, it will have to be Dominos.)

2. There are some really cute animal cakes on yesterday's Sunday Sweets post on Cake Wrecks (Sundays they feature cakes that are awesome, not wrecky).

Nathan Fillion - Everyone's a Hero
It's hard to pick favorite songs from Dr Horrible because they're all so awesome, but this is definitely near the top and it's the one that gets stuck in my head the most. I often find myself singing "everyone's a hero in their own way/you and you and mostly me and you" and "get up, go out and fly/especially that guy, he smells like poo".

1. Had a mini Simpsons marathon & Korean takeout with Alexander yesterday.

2. All caught up on Parks & Rec, Modern Family, and Supernatural! Now I just need to watch the last four eps of Ugly Betty and I will be good to go.

3. The new Ayu album is really good!

I will upload & talk about the new album soon, but for today, here is one of my favoritest older Ayu songs. So pretty!

Couple things
me as a doll
First off, if you're reading this via the main journal page rather than your friends page, you may have noticed a name change from Grace to Travis. I have been out as transgender for a while on my other journals and have now decided to officially come out here as well, so. There's that. In addition, Bruce is now going by Carla, and I will start referring to her by that name here, so if you wonder where Bruce went and who Carla is, they are the same person, just also now out as transgender.

The other thing is that I'm considering phasing out this journal in favor of my other LJ and my Dreamwidth journal. I originally kept my two LJs separate because I wanted a space that didn't have all the Digimon baggage, especially when I was feeling pressured about not being as active in Digimon as I once was. But that was a pretty long time ago and I don't really feel that need anymore.

So while I still haven't decided yet for sure, I probably will stop crossposting to this journal eventually. If you want, you can friend me on my other LJ, kyuuketsukirui, or over on Dreamwidth, where my username is kanata. (I consider my Dreamwidth to be my primary journal, but am still planning on crossposting to kyuuketsukirui for the foreseeable future. I will, however, be changing the journal link on my website to link to Dreamwidth.)

And while I'm talking about Dreamwidth, if you're not familiar with it, it's a pretty awesome site, basically LJ but better in so many ways. It's invite-only to create a journal, but if you'd like an invite code, just let me know.
